BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels held William & Mary to just 25.4% shooting and came away with a 45-43 win Sunday afternoon at Gore Arena. It's the second lowest field goal percentage Campbell has allowed this season, and lowest to a Division I opponent.
Â
The Camels improved to 10-7 and 3-1 in CAA play, while the Tribe now sits at 8-7 (1-3). Campbell is now 7-0 at home after starting the home slate 10-0 last season.
Â
Cassidy Geddes led all scorers with 18 points, and she was the only William & Mary player in double figures.
Gianni Boone and
Jasmine Felton led the way for the Camels with 10 apiece.
Â
The first quarter was a defensive battle, with each team making three shots for a 7-7 scoreline.
Olivia Tucker had four of Campbell's points, matched by Natalie Fox's effort for the Tribe. The starting big for William & Mary did get into early foul trouble, picking up her second foul in the first frame.
Â
The Camels forced five turnovers in the first quarter and held William & Mary to just 18% shooting. The Tribe went nearly five minutes between makes at one point.
Â
The Tribe opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run to take the lead, but the Camels answered with a 7-0 run of their own to take the lead, 14-11, going into the media timeout. Tucker made her three-point attempt, and
N'na Konate scored on a putback to cap the run.
Â
The scoring run extended to 10-0 after
Jasmine Nivar banked in a three-pointer with 4:23 to play in the quarter.
Â
William & Mary answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 17, forcing a timeout by Campbell with 2:09 to play before halftime.
Â
Campbell wrestled the momentum back to their side, ending the half on a 5-0 run for a 22-17 halftime score. Felton completed an old fashioned three-point play, and
Peris Smith and Nivar each made one free throw with less than a minute on the clock.
Â
William & Mary won the third quarter 14-10, behind 10 points from Geddes, and the Tribe cut the lead to one entering the fourth quarter.
Â
The Tribe got its first lead of the second half with 6:19 to play after two free throws by Geddes. William & Mary still led by one at the fourth quarter media timeout.
Â
Campbell's defense once again locked down the opponent in the final minutes of the game. After holding Elon scoreless of the final five minutes on Friday, the Camels did not allow William & Mary to score in the final 3:18 today.
Â
A jumper in the lane from Boone tied the game at 41 with 3:44 to play. Geddes and Nivar exchanged baskets to tie the game at 43 apiece before the games final bucket at the 1:18 mark, an Alexander breakaway layup resulting from her block on the opposite end.
Â
The Tribe had the ball with 17 seconds remaining, but Campbell's defense held firm to seal the victory.
